OCTOBER WORKSHOPS
Beginning Knitting
Mondays, October 1st and 8th, 6:30-8pm
Just in time for cooler weather! It's the perfect time
of year to pick up knitting needles and learn a new
skill. By the time the holidays roll around, you'll
have a stack of handmade gifts! This class is for
absolute beginners---we'll start with the basics and
move on up to some serious scarf making. Seasoned
knitter Adrienne of the Crafty Beavers will teach us
casting-on, basic knit and purl stitches, changing
colors, and casting-off. In this class we'll make an
ipod/cell phone cozie and a scarf. All materials for
the cozie will be provided and the materials list for
the scarf will be discussed on the first night.
Workshop Fee: $25 Materials Fee: $2
Knitting Lab
Sundays, October 7th-November 18, 6-8pm
$5 per session
So you know the basics and are ready for something
new? Well this Lab is perfect for the budding knitter
on-the-go! Each Sunday night, knitting pro Alissa of
Creatrix Jane will be teaching a new skill that can be
applied to a variety of projects. We'll start with
gauge and move on up to cable knitting, making several
educational stops along the way. Each lab is an
individual drop-in session, so no class
commitments-just take away exactly what you want to
know on the nights you're available. Please see the
attached document for a description of the lab
schedule. You'll be staking out a sweater pattern in
no time!
A Skirt for Every Body!
Saturdays, October 13th and 20th, 2-5pm
In this class, you'll learn how to draft a simple
straight or a-line skirt pattern using your own
measurements and then bring your design to life!
Sewing Master Alissa will guide you the process and
teach you all the necessary tips and tricks. In the
first session, we'll discuss types of skirts, draft
the pattern, and calculate the amount of fabric you'll
need. Please bring the following measurements, taken
wearing normal undergarments: waist circumference
(wherever you like your skirts to sit), hip
circumference (widest point), hip depth (vertical
distance between those lines), and skirt hem length
(where you want it to fall). Also bring a ball point
pen and straight edge. In the second session, we'll
sew that skirt! Bring your sewing machine and you'll
learn seam allowances, interfacings, darts, facings,
zippers, seam finishing, and hemming. Basic sewing
skills are required for this course.
Class Fee: $30
Materials Fee: $4
Sewing Lab
Sunday October 28th, 1-2:30pm
Spend more time staring at your sewing machine that
sewing with it? Do you need a little help figuring out
all the working parts or are you just stuck on a
particular project? Emily of Umbrella Girl Productions
has been sewing for over a decade and can certainly
help you win the battle between human and machine. She
specializes in older models but can also work a basic
modern model (no computerized stuff, please). In order
to ensure personalized instruction, the lab is limited
to 3 people, so reserve your spot quickly!
Class Fee: $12
Sew Basic
Sunday, October 28th, 3-5pm
Whether you're looking to create a fashion vision or
just fix up a piece that no longer fits, this is the
class for you! Emily will be back to teach some basic
hand sewing skills and demonstrate several sewing
techniques to make and alter simple garments.
Additionally we will talk about patterns, selecting
fabrics, and sewing notions. Please bring a shirt or
skirt you'd like to discuss altering.
Class Fee: $15 (or take both Sewing Lab and Sew Basic
for only $22!)
*Fall Workshops are being added almost daily, so
please stay tuned for further developments! Expect
updates next week!
**Advance Registration is required for all classes
(except Knitting Lab). To register, please call
447-3445, email us, or stop by the shop.
CRAFT MY RIDE CONTEST!
Can your craftiness win you a new car? Oh, yes it can
and your "I love Bob Barker" T-shirt has nothing to do
with it! Scion is challenging indie crafters to design
hand-made car accessories for a Scion vehicle in a
nationwide craft making competition.
Crafters will have from now until October 22 to submit
accessory designs for items such as key chains, seat
covers, floor mats, steering wheel covers, tissue
holders, etc., to www.CraftMyRide.com. Crafters will
need to go to the website to obtain rules and
instructions. A pool of crafty retail stores
(including Wholly Craft!) chosen from across the
United States will judge submissions, and finalists
will be chosen November 2.
Finalists will have until November 16 to mail in their
completed designs consisting of materials common to
arts and crafts, for example yarn, fabric, paper,
metal, buttons, beads, and ribbon. Judges will select
the winners based on creativity, usefulness, and
marketability. The first place winner will receive a
2008 Scion xD, with the second place and third place
winners receiving $1,000 and $500 respectively. So get
crafting folks and hopefully find your self in a
sweet, sweet Scion this winter!
